NEXT TIME YOU WALK BY a store like J. Crew or Banana Republic, notice the male mannequins: they always sport several layers at once. Layers on men look great on camera, so even when it’s hot outside, trust that it’s worth an hour or two of some discomfort for photos that will last you a lifetime. Adding another layer will bring extra dimension and visual interest to your photos.

Layers are also a way to incorporate a little bit of pop of color or pattern without being too loud. Consider a bold collared shirt under a more neutral sweater. Don't forget hats and scarfs (yes, guys can wear them, too!) or nice coats for the winter months: practical + fashion-forward.

Pro tip: start with what you already like to wear, what's already in your closet, and build off of that. the more comfortable you are, the better you will feel in front of the camera.
